The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) resolutely denounces an Azerbaijani court decision to sentence the IRFS chairman and popular blogger Mehman Huseynov to two years in prison and calls for his immediate and unconditional release. IRFS calls on international organisations and states to bolster accountability for press freedom abuses in Azerbaijan, and immediately apply sanctions against the Azerbaijani ruling establishment. On 3 March, Nasimi District Court, under Judge Shalala Hasanova, reviewed the application of the prosecutor’s office to extend journalist Elchin Ismayilli’s period of pre-trial detention. Elchin Ismayilli’s detention term was extended for three months. Background: Elchin Ismayilli, a journalist based in north-western Azerbaijani city Ismayilli, left home and did not come back on 17 February. On 18 February, a 24-hour-arrest decision was issued
On 3 March, Nasimi District Court chaired by Judge Shalala Hasanova considered the prosecution motion to prolong the period of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party activist Fuad Ahmadli’s detention on remand. The court extended the activist’s detention term for three months. Background: Fuad Ahmadli was detained on 18 August 2016. On 3 March, Nasimi District Court examined the petition filed by the prosecutor’s office seeking the extension of the pre-trial detention term of the assistant to the chairman of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP), distribution director of Azadliq newspaper Faig Amirli. The hearing was presided over by Judge Shalala Hasanova. The court prolonged Amirli’s pre-trial detention and investigation period for three months. Background: Faig Amirli
