Relatives of theologian Abgul Suleymanov reported on 9 March that he was put in solitary confinement on 6 March. The reason behind Suleymanov’s punishment is believed to be his recently disseminated statement on theologian Sardar Hajihasanli’s arrest in the Masalli region. On 9 March, Baku Court of Appeal denied Azadliq newspaper financial director Faig Amirli’s appeal against Nasimi District Court’s decision to extend his pre-trial detention term at a closed hearing, lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev has reported. According to the lawyer, at the hearing, he also learned that Faig Amirli’s case had been separated from the joint case with Azerbaijan Popular Front Party member Fuad Ahmadli. (more…)
On 9 March, the board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) decided to suspend Azerbaijan’s membership in the organisation due to the leadership of the country failing to ensure or enable an environment for civil society. The government of Azerbaijan is currently trying to spin the narrative that they willingly left the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) because they no longer wanted to be a part of the group.
