IRFS Calls for Immediate Release of their Jailed Chairman<\/strong><\/p>\n
The Institute for Reporters\u2019 Freedom and Safety (IRFS) calls for the immediate and unconditional release of their chairman, anti-corruption blogger Mehman Huseynov, whose mother, Firangiza Huseynova, is on life support, in critical condition in a Baku hospital.<\/p>\n
The long-time anti-corruption and democracy activist, IRFS chairman Mehman Huseynov has been incarcerated since March 2017, when a Baku court sentenced him to two years in prison on charges of defaming an entire police station, after he gave a statement in front of the courthouse in which he described the abuses he had suffered at that police station.<\/p>\n
The constant stress caused by imprisonment of Mehman Huseynov who is also the only relative she is dependent on and with whom the elderly mother lived, led to a sharp deterioration in her health, the collapse of which came on 15 July. The mother of the well-known anti-corruption journalist and human rights activist is currently in the intensive care unit after a cardiac arrest.<\/p>\n
Despite the appeal to the Azerbaijani authorities, by his lawyers and by Mehman Huseynov himself, to provide an opportunity to visit his 71-year-old mother who has been in the hospital on life support machines for more than 10 days now, the Azerbaijani authorities, to this day, refuse to release the journalist.<\/p>\n
Refusing to even temporarily release Mehman Huseynov, who has been in prison since 3 March 2017 on a two-year sentence, the Azerbaijani authorities are deliberately intimidating their opponents and the Azerbaijani society as a whole, demonstratively showing that they do not intend to deviate from the path of repression.<\/p>\n
“Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, and his spouse, First Vice President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, being the initiators of the political persecution of their famous critic, are directly responsible for the continuous pressure on the journalist and his family members,”<\/em> said Emin Huseynov, the elder brother and co-founder of the IRFS, in political asylum since 2015.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
\u201cThe European Union, the United States and other international partners of Azerbaijan must call to account the corrupt, anti-democratic ruling regime of Azerbaijan and in case of refusal to abide by the international obligations concerning human rights protection and the fight against corruption and money laundering, to begin applying sanctions against the high-ranking members of the government and the members of their families. Representatives of the despotic ruling regime and their family members, who are responsible for tragically crippling individual families as much as the entire Azerbaijani nation, should not be able to travel to the EU countries and buy, without impunity, expensive real estate and other kinds of property, with stolen money from the Azerbaijani taxpayers, and enjoy a luxury life the source of which is kleptocracy and nepotism. The governments of the Western countries should, on the contrary, freeze all illegal foreign assets and start denying entry on the territory of their countries to the officials in question\u201d,<\/em> said Emin Huseynov.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

L’Institut pour la libert\u00e9 et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 des journalistes (IRFS) appelle \u00e0 la lib\u00e9ration imm\u00e9diate et inconditionnelle de son pr\u00e9sident, le blogueur anti-corruption Mehman Huseynov, dont sa m\u00e8re, Firangiza Huseynova, est dans un \u00e9tat de sante grave dans un h\u00f4pital de Bakou.<\/p>\n
L’activiste anti-corruption et pour la d\u00e9mocratie, pr\u00e9sident de l’IRFS, Mehman Huseynov, est incarc\u00e9r\u00e9 depuis mars 2017, lorsqu’un tribunal de Bakou l’a condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 deux ans de prison pour diffamation d\u2019un commissariat apr\u00e8s avoir fait une d\u00e9claration devant le palais de justice dans lequel il a d\u00e9crit les abus qu’il avait subis dans ce poste de police.<\/p>\n
Le stress constant caus\u00e9 par l’arrestation de son fils innocent, qui est aussi le seul proche rest\u00e9 en charge de la famille et avec qui la m\u00e8re \u00e2g\u00e9e a v\u00e9cu, a entra\u00een\u00e9 une forte d\u00e9t\u00e9rioration de sa sant\u00e9, dont l’effondrement a eu lieu le 15 juillet. La m\u00e8re du journaliste anti-corruption et militant des droits de l’homme est actuellement dans l’unit\u00e9 de soins intensifs apr\u00e8s un arr\u00eat cardiaque.<\/p>\n
Malgr\u00e9 l’appel des avocats et de Mehman Huseynov lui-m\u00eame aux autorit\u00e9s azerba\u00efdjanaises, pour lui donner la possibilit\u00e9 de rendre visite \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re de 71 ans, qui est hospitalis\u00e9e depuis plus de 10 jours et qui est connect\u00e9e aux dispositifs de support de la vie, les autorit\u00e9s azerba\u00efdjanaises refusent, \u00e0 ce jour, de lib\u00e9rer le journaliste.<\/p>\n
Refusant de lib\u00e9rer m\u00eame provisoirement Mehman Huseynov, qui est en prison depuis le 3 mars 2017, condamn\u00e9 \u00e0 deux ans d’emprisonnement, les autorit\u00e9s intimident d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment ses opposants et la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 azerba\u00efdjanaise dans son ensemble, prouvant de fa\u00e7on d\u00e9monstrative qu’ils n’ont pas l’intention de d\u00e9vier du chemin de la r\u00e9pression.<\/p>\n
