\nWe fully support the importance of fair, human rights-focused actions to ease the impact of climate change on food systems and guarantee food security globally. We find the issue of climate change particularly important for the common well-being and strongly condemn politicization of this issue. However, we are concerned about the potential misuse of Azerbaijan’s COP29 Presidency as a means of political whitewashing of authoritarian ruler Ilham Aliyev and increasing his international legitimacy. While COP29 is expected to serve as a platform for inclusive discussions among states, stakeholders, and civil society, the government of Azerbaijan has intensified suppression of all forms of criticism by arresting environmental activists and journalists, such as our colleague Teymur Karimov, who outlined water pollution from large gold mining production. Since Azerbaijan has gained the status of the host country, the crackdown on civic space has reached an unprecedented extent, with the number of political prisoners exceeding 250 individuals . Notably, with foreign funding being prohibited in the country, the state leaves no opportunities for civil society to receive independent financing and present alternative reports on the government\u2019s policies in the sphere of climate justice and human rights. We regretfully acknowledge that even during the Azerbaijan`s COP29 Presidency, Azerbaijani State Oil Company SOCAR in a partnership with BP continues to increase oil and gas production in the Caspian Sea, despite government`s official statements to make a shift to green economy.<\/p>\n
