They linked the criminal case to their professional activities. On February 6, the head of the arqument.az news website Shamshad Aga was arrested in the same case, on February 21 – freelance journalist Nurlan Gahramanli, and on March 1 – journalist Fatima Movlamli. The court then extended the pretrial detention of the accused.

On March 17, the Baku Court of Appeal chaired by Judge Ramin Garagurbanli heard Aysel Umudova’s complaint against the refusal to transfer her to house arrest, said lawyer Agil Laij.

“We indicated that there are no grounds for keeping Umudova in custody. She is accused of smuggling foreign currency, but the investigation has not provided any evidence of this. If the investigation is busy collecting evidence, then this can be done without keeping the girl in custody. Moreover, she has health problems,” the lawyer said.

However, the court rejected the complaint. “We will continue taking steps to release Umudova from custody. We have already filed a new appeal against the decision to extend the preventive measure in the form of arrest for another three months,” the lawyer noted.

An employee of the Baku Court of Appeal confirmed the information about the rejection of Umudova’s complaint. Representatives of the investigative body were not available for comment.

The appeal against the refusal to transfer Meydan TV journalist Aysel Umudova to house arrest was dismissed by the Baku Court of Appeal.
