Ibrahimov and his defense disagree with the verdict and intend to appeal it.

Emin Ibrahimov was detained in Baku on July 22, 2024, and charged with stabbing a person. The criminal case is being investigated under articles on hooliganism and intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm for hooligan motives. Ibrahimov rejected the charges, linking the prosecution to his criticism of the Azerbaijani authorities.

Ibrahimov’s trial in the Baku Court of Grave Crimes ended today with a guilty verdict, his lawyer Fakhraddin Mehdiyev said.

“We, the defense, pointed out that the trial did not prove Emin Ibragimov’s guilt. Even police witnesses said they did not see Ibragimov stabbing. The victim, Kamal Shukurov, gave confusing and implausible testimony. For example, he claimed that he gave his initial testimony to the police supposedly the day after surgery, but a person whose health had been “severely damaged” could not leave the hospital the next day to give testimony, especially since he allegedly underwent a complex colon surgery. We are convinced that the victim staged the stabbing, and asked the court to acquit Ibragimov due to the lack of evidence of guilt,” the lawyer said. Ibragimov himself called the criminal case against him “a political order.” “Emin Ibragimov said that the case against him was fabricated in order to punish him for consistently criticizing the government’s policies. He asked the court to acquit him,” the defense lawyer continued.

The lawyer said that the court dropped the charge of hooliganism against Ibrahimov (Article 221.3 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan), but found him guilty of intentionally causing serious bodily harm in a generally dangerous manner for hooligan motives (Article 126.2.4 of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan). As a punishment, the court sentenced the former diplomat to seven years in prison. The lawyer said that the verdict will be appealed.

A court employee confirmed that Emin Ibrahimov had been sentenced. The victim Shukurov and representatives of the prosecution were unavailable for comment.

From 2007 to 2020, Emin Ibrahimov was in the diplomatic service, which he left in protest against the falsifications in the 2020 parliamentary elections. After that, Ibrahimov was engaged in analytical work, taught courses at the Institute of Political Management and was a consistent critic of the Azerbaijani government.

A Baku court has sentenced former Azerbaijani diplomat Emin Ibrahimov to seven years in prison, dropping one of the charges.
