As of May 1, 2025<\/strong>, Azerbaijani opposition politician Tofiq Yagublu<\/strong> has been on a hunger strike for 31 days<\/strong> to protest his imprisonment. A prominent member of the Musavat Party<\/strong> and the National Council<\/strong>, Yagublu’s deteriorating health has sparked concern among his family, legal representatives, civil society, and international observers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to his daughter, Nigar Hezi<\/strong>, her father has lost 16 kg<\/strong> and is now experiencing hallucinations<\/strong>, loss of consciousness<\/strong>, and memory problems<\/strong>. His lawyer, Nazim Musayev<\/strong>, who visited him at the Ministry of Justice’s medical facility on May 1<\/strong>, reported that Yagublu is so weak he had to be supported by staff<\/strong> and was unable to remember medical details. The lawyer emphasized the situation is life-threatening<\/strong> and requires immediate intervention<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 28<\/strong>, physician Adil Qeybulla<\/strong> was initially granted permission to examine Yagublu, but this was later revoked<\/strong>, raising further alarm among his family and supporters. On April 30<\/strong>, lawyer Aqil Layij<\/strong> met with Yagublu, confirming his worsening state and brief responsiveness. He described the situation as critical, stating Yagublu was on the verge of death<\/strong>, and demanded urgent medical access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yagublu was arrested in December 2023<\/strong> and sentenced on March 10, 2025<\/strong>, by the Baku Court for Grave Crimes to nine years in prison<\/strong> on charges of fraud<\/strong> and forgery<\/strong>. His appeal hearing is scheduled for May 6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 30<\/strong>, 42 prominent Azerbaijani figures<\/strong> from the fields of literature, music, and cinema<\/strong>, including Ayaz Araba\u00e7\u0131<\/strong>, Murad <\/strong>Kohnegala, Karamet Boyukchol, Rasim Qaraca<\/strong>, and Asad Qaraqaplan<\/strong>, signed a joint statement<\/strong> in his defense. They emphasized Yagublu\u2019s status as a Karabakh war veteran<\/strong> and urged unity in supporting his cause, calling on President Ilham Aliyev<\/strong> to consider his national service and ensure his immediate release<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigar Hezi has also issued strong statements, declaring that the Aliyev regime bears direct responsibility<\/strong> for her father\u2019s life and imprisonment, which she describes as politically motivated<\/strong>. She repeated Yagublu\u2019s own words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not Yagublu\u2019s first hunger strike. In March 2020<\/strong>, he went without food for 17 days<\/strong> in protest of his arrest. Due to health complications, his prison sentence at that time was converted to a suspended sentence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case has drawn increasing international attention<\/strong>. U.S. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton<\/strong> publicly urged President Aliyev to release Yagublu. The Norwegian Helsinki Committee<\/strong> also issued a statement demanding his release.
