On June 10, Azerbaijani courts advanced the legal proceedings against Imran Aliyev and Elgiz Gahraman in the \u201cMeclis.info<\/u><\/strong><\/a>\u201d case, raising broader concerns over the state\u2019s ongoing efforts to suppress independent media. These developments coincide with harsh sentences requested in the related Abzas Media investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meclis.info<\/u><\/strong><\/a> is a civic watchdog platform monitoring Azerbaijan\u2019s parliament. Its director, Imran Aliyev<\/strong>, was arrested at Baku\u2019s Heydar Aliyev International Airport in April\u202f2024 on smuggling charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow defendant Elgiz Gahraman<\/strong>, a civic activist, was detained in February\u202f2025 and placed under police supervision .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both face eight charges related to financial crimes and abuse of authority, carrying prison terms of up to 12 years .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simultaneously, the Abzas Media<\/strong> case began in November\u202f2023, with the outlet\u2019s director Ulvi Hasanli<\/strong> and six colleagues detained on smuggling and money-laundering accusations. International watchdogs label this crackdown as politically charged and punitive .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Baku\u2019s Serious Crimes Court, presided by Judge Roman \u018fl\u0259kb\u0259rli, the prosecution formally read the indictment. Meclis.info<\/u><\/strong><\/a> allegations revolve around undeclared grants and falsified customs documents, allegedly coordinated with those detained in Abzas Media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abzas Media\u2019s<\/strong> Hasanli endured police brutality. A 2024 Reuters report confirmed he was subjected to beatings and electric shocks following his arrest, which sparked international outrage .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kekalov affirmed in court:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
