{"id":31090,"date":"2025-09-16T20:17:01","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T20:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irfs.org\/?p=31090"},"modified":"2025-09-16T20:17:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T20:17:02","slug":"baku-court-sentences-opposition-blogger-to-prison-in-absentia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irfs.org\/az\/news-feed\/baku-court-sentences-opposition-blogger-to-prison-in-absentia\/","title":{"rendered":"Baku Court Sentences Opposition Blogger to Prison in Absentia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On September 15, the Binagadi District Court of Baku concluded the criminal case against Azerbaijani blogger <strong>Mahammad Mirzali<\/strong>, who resides in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court sentenced Mirzali to <strong>6 years and 6 months in prison in absentia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mirzali was found guilty under articles 220.2 (<strong>organization of mass riots<\/strong>) and 281.1 (<strong>public calls for the violent seizure of power<\/strong>) of the Criminal Code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The criminal case against Mirzali was opened by the Prosecutor General&#8217;s Office of Azerbaijan in March of this year. On June 3, the Binagadi District Court issued a warrant for his arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mirzali is a fierce critic of the Azerbaijani authorities.
