EVENT HELD REGARDING INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Today, 9 December, in the Human Rights House Foundation, a press conference was held regarding 10 December International Human Rights Day. 

Human rights defender Novella Jafaroglu congratulated her colleagues in connection with this day when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted.

N. Jafaroglu added that five embassies – Norwegian, British, German, American, and French- and the Council of Europe strongly supported the human rights defenders.

Human Rights Defender Saida Gojamanli spoke about the serious situation of human rights in Azerbaijan. She touched upon issues regarding “Tolishi-sado” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Novruzali Mammadov`s death, imprisonment of young bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade and the health of imprisoned “Bizim yol” Newspaper Editor-in-chief Mushfig Huseynov, who is receiving treatment for late-stage TB.

The human rights defenders said that Andreas Herkel, Parliament Assembly of Council of Europe (PACE) Monitoring Committee co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan, and Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammerberg were awarded a special prize and noted that the awards will be presented to owners in Strasburg.

Human rights defenders, journalists and representative of several embassies participated in the event.

61 years have passed since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
