“GUNDALIK BAKI” NEWSPAPER TRIAL COMING TO CLOSE

Today (19 June) in the Yasamal District Court, under the chairmanship Khagani Tagiyev, a hearing was conducted on Defense Ministry Apartment Exploitation Department soldier Fardi Murselov’s lawsuit against “Gundalik Baki” Newspaper for insult of honor and dignity.

Today the two sides gave their closing statements. The plaintiff and his lawyer asked the court to fulfill the lawsuit.

Defendant Habil Valiyev, who is the chief editor of “Gundalik Baki,” asked the court to adopt a fair decision. And Valiyev’s representative Uzeir Jafarov, called the lawsuit unfounded, and said, “Depending on what decision this court adopts, we will take this case all the way to the European Court of Human Rights.”

After this, Judge Tagiyev announced a recess until tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. It is anticipated that the verdict will be unveiled at that time.
This lawsuit stems from the article "Mehman Hajiyev's Illegal Actions" in which libellious information was allegedly published about F.Mursalov. According to the lawsuit, F.Mursalov and his parents were concerned after reading this article and decided to take this step. Mursalov is seeking the pulibcation of a refutation and the institution of a 50,000 AZN fine. "Gundalik Baki" newspaper chief editor Adil Huseynli told the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety, and that there's nothing libelous and defamatory in the article.
