ALI HASANOV SAYS IMPRISONED JOURNALISTS HAVE BEEN REFORMED

Yesterday, head of the Social-Political Department of Presidential Administration Ali Hasanov responded to a question about possible amnesty for Azerbaijan’s imprisoned journalists on the eve of National Press Day (22 July).

According Trend Information Agency, Hasanov said that the majority of the journalists that were arrested for their professional activities have already been amnestied by the president. But he also announced that amnesty issue depends on decision of President Ilham Aliyev, who is chairperson of the Amnesty Commission. Hasanov said that at present the majority of Azerbaijan’s imprisoned journalists are there because of law violations unrelated to their professional activities, and added that he does not support imprisoning journalists because of their professional activities.
“I would like to see the journalists be released as soon as possible,” said Hasanov. “I think that the journalists have been reformed in prison and they already understand their mistakes in definite areas.”
