A resident of the village of Gobu, the Absheron region, Sultanova Kamala Gulmirza gizi, born in 1995, was found dead near her home on August 24.
According to the Absheron region prosecutor’s office, the investigation revealed solid suspicions that the murder was committed by the ex-husband of the deceased, Sultanov Nurlan Nazim oglu who inflicted numerous stab wounds on her.
In fact, a criminal case has been initiated under Article 120.1 (premeditated murder) of the Criminal Code. Sultanov turned himself in and was brought to the investigation as a suspect. Investigative actions are ongoing, the report says.
It should be noted that cases of female homicides on domestic grounds have become more frequent recently. Note that these crimes became a subject of debates in social networks, feminists held a number of protest actions. After that, the Prosecutor General’s Office issued a special appeal to the population due to the facts of violence against women.
The appeal noted that in the first half of 2021, 33 women fell victim to premeditated murder. In case of violence against women, the Prosecutor General’s Office called persons aggrieved to make an urgent phone call to the Prosecutor General’s Office number “961”.
In turn, local human rights activists believe that the main reason for uptick in violence is impunity, so they call on Azerbaijan to join the Istanbul Convention.
