Yesterday, 7 December, Rena Zahidova visited her husband, “Azadlig” newspaper satiric/journalist Sakit Zahidov in Prison #10.
R.Zahidova told the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety, “Sakit’s general condition is normal. He doesn’t have any complaints about his health. But another provocation is being prepared against him in the prison.”
R.Zahidova claims that in the prison a prisoner has been placed in the same cell with Sakit to create provocation. It is possible that a lawsuit will be filed against Sakit Zahidov to blame him in libel and slander due to his satiric writings published in the newspapers, and his prison term could be increased, according to R.Zahidova.
Sakit’s defense lawyer Isakhan Ashurov told IRFS that he does not have any information about this and that he will investigate this issue.
No one answered our phone calls at the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Services. Public Relations Department Head Mehman Sadigov said that he is on vacation and therefore cannot answer our questions.
Sakit Zahidov faced provocation and physical violation in prison #14 where he was previously held. After local and international human rights defense organizations interfered, Sakit Zahidov was transferred to Prison #10 on 1 November 2008.
