AZERBAIJAN’S AMBASSADOR TO USA OBJECTS TO AMERICAN NEWSPAPER ARTICLE

According to "Yeni Musavat" Newspaper, "The New York Times" newspaper published a letter of Azerbaijan's ambassador to the USA Yashar Aliyev yesterday.

The letter was written in response to an article published in "The New York Times" newspaper on 3 February that was critical of Azerbaijan’s government. Y. Aliyev thinks that the author of the article ignores accomplishments Azerbaijan has achieved in the area of democracy.
The article, entitled "Seeking a Path in Democracy's Dead End," states that although the parliamentary contest in November 2005 was falsified in Azerbaijan and riot police used force against peaceful opposition protesters, Washington was satisfied with just mildly criticizing the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Later I. Aliyev was invited to the White House and it was apparent that the Bush Administration didn't want to spoil the relations with Azerbaijan over democracy problems.
