BAKHTIYAR HAJIYEV SENTENCED TO 2 YEARS IN JAIL

Today the Nizami District Court of Ganja city passed a sentence on the case of youth activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, charged with army evasion, his attorney Elchin Namazov told Objective TV. Judge Emin Akhundov presided over the hearing.

According to Namazov, after deliberation, Akhundov announced his decision to sentence the activist to 2 years in jail.
Deeming the sentence unfair and biased, the attorneys will be appealing agaisnt the decision.
The criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was launched at the end of January, 2011. At that time, he signed a statement of commitment not to leave Ganja city. At the end of February his pre-trial detention was replaced with release under police bail.

On March 4, 2011, Hajiyev was sentenced to one-month’s pre-trial detention. It is widely thought that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign.
