BBC INTENDS TO HOLD NEGOTIATIONS WITH AZERBAIJAN’S GOVERNMENT

“BBC World Service” wants to carry out negotiations with Azerbaijan’s government to restore BBC radio’s operation on FM radio in Azerbaijan. According to APA, “BBC World Service” wants to discuss the fate of a contract ratified in October last year on installing three FM transmitters in the Agsu, Dashkasan and Lerik regions to improve the quality of BBC’s broadcasts.

The representatives of the radio noted that they regret the decision of Azerbaijan's National Television and Radio Council to discontinue foreign radio broadcasts on FM frequencies as of 1 January 2009, adding that they are looking for different means to continue BBC’s broadcast in the regions.
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety attempted to contact the Radiofrequency Department of Azerbaijan Republic about the abovementioned contract. However, their calls went unanswered.
The broadcasts of "Radio Liberty", "Voice of America" and BBC via FM frequencies in Azerbaijan were ceased on 1 January 2009 on the basis of a decision that Azerbaijan's National Television and Radio Council issued on 30 December 2008.
