CASSATION APPEAL OF NOVRUZALI MAMMADOV`S WIDOW NOT GRANTED

Lawyer Ramiz Mammadov reported to IRFS today that on 6 October, the Supreme Court heard the cassation appeal filed by the family of the late Tolishi Sado newspaper editor-in-chief Novruzali Mammadov.

Mammadov's widow, Maryam Mammadova, and son, Emil Mammadov, were appealing against the 29 April 2011 decision of the Baku Appeals Court. Judge Tatyana Goldman presided over the hearing.
Mammadov sad that decision is unfair and they will be taking the case to the European Court of Human Rights.
BACKGROUND
In 2007, in a closed hearing, Mammadov was sentenced to ten years in jail and charged with high treason.  Mammadov, a ethnic Talysh, believed that he was jailed with because of his work with ethnic-political issues and freedom of expression.
The 68 year old editor-in-chief died in the Justice Ministry Penitentiary Services Central Hospital in 2009. Governmental agencies said that his death was due to illness; however, the Defense Committee for Novruzali Mammadov`s rights and members of his family said that the editor-in-chief died due to medical negligence.
