Charges against Journalist Unfounded, Says Lawyer

Lawyer Elchin Sadigov has called the charges brought against Journalist Research Centre (jam.az) new website’s chief editor Fikrat Faramazoglu unfounded.

“He is accused of demanding a bribe through threats, but there is no single evidence in the criminal case to prove this claim. I therefore consider the charges and the pre-trial detention order to be groundless. The reason Fikrat Faramazoglu has been arrested is his journalistic activity,” Sadigov noted.

Background: Fikrat Faramazoglu was arrested on 30 June 2016. He is charged under Article 182 (extortion) of the Criminal Code. On 02 July 2016, Narimanov district Court ordered his pre-trial detention.
