Head of the Chief Prosecutor's Office's Public Relations Vugar Aliyev told the press yesterday (6 February) that Chief Prosecutor Zakir Garalov met with Parliament Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) co-rapporteurs on Azerbaijan Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Jivkova.
During the meeting Garalov stated, "No journalist has been arrested recently in connection with his professional activity."
The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety believes that this is an attempt by the Chief Prosecutor to deliberately confuse the public. Journalist Eynulla Fatullayev was arrested due to his professional activity. He accused of threatening terror in the article "Aliyevs Go to War," and sentenced to 8.5 years of imprisonment. In addition, other journalists have been arrested on political orders, through provocative operations organized by law enforcement agencies.
