A copy of the case materials from the case against imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper Editor-in-Chief Ganimat Zahid’s case has been given to the chief editor’s lawyers.
Elchin Sadigov, one of G. Zahid’s lawyers, told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. E. Sadigov noted that the papers reveal contradictions in statements given by Sevgilada Guliyeva. In her initial testimony, S. Guliyeva stated G. Zahid expressed that he would like to get acquainted with her. But while giving another statement, Guiyeva claimed that G. Zahid cursed at her. Lawyer E. Sadigov also noted that the investigation materials will be helpful to G.Zahid’s defense, as will interrogation of driver Babayar Mammadov who transported Guilyeva and Vusal Hasanov away from the scene of the incident.
Recall that Ganimat Zahid was detained on November 11 and given pre-trial detention in connection with a 7 November altercation in front of the building in which “Azadlig” Newspaper’s office is located. Zahid alleges that Guliyeva and Hasanov were sent to provoke him and that he was attacked by them, however Guilyeva and Hasanov claim that Zahid attacked them and inflicted bodily harm.
