DIPLOMATIC CORPS REPRESENTATIVES VISIT BAKHTIYAR HAJIYEV

On November 11th, members of the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan, as well as representatives of the embassies of Great Britain and Poland visited former parliamentary candidate and youth blogger, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, who is being held in prison # 14.

According to the Turan News Agency, the diplomatic corps representatives were primarily interested in the conditions of his detention.  Hajiyev noted that so far no problems had occurred, and spent time discussing the political situation in the country and other issues.
A graduate of Harvard University and 2010 parliamentary candidate, Hajiyev was arrested on March 4th, 2011 and sentenced to 2 years in jail on May 18th, 2011, charged with evasion of military service. He is being held in prison #14 in the Gizildash settlement  of the Garadag district. Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, himself, several local and international human rights defense organizations, and Azerbaijani’s opposition political parties believe that his arrest is politically motivated. It is widely thought that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign
