DURING HEARING ON PARVIZ AZIMOV’S LAWSUIT PARTIES DECIDE TO RECONCILE

Today, June 23, in the Lankeran City Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Azer Samadov, a hearing was held on student/journalist Parviz Azimov’s lawsuit for wrongful expulsion from Lankeran State University (LSU). The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Parviz Azimov.

P.Azimov’s representative Yashar Agazade and defendant’s representative Ruslan Hamidov took part in the hearing.
Parviz Azimov said that they filed two motions during today’s hearing; one for the representative of the Ministry of Justice and one for LSU Rector to be involved in the hearing as witnesses. The second motion was fulfilled. Then the judge suggested that the parties come to an agreement. Azimov stated that both parties submitted an appeal to the court regarding the settlement.
The judge postponed the hearing indefinitely.

LSU claims that Parviz Azimov violated internal discipline rules to expel him (allegedly beat a fellow student); however Azimov says that he was expelled because of his article “Open Bazaar in Closed Rooms,” which was published in “Janub Khabarlari” Newspaper on 10 February 2009. Azimov was in his senior year at LSU when he was expelled this February.
