On July 13th Nizami District Court under presiding judge Imran Burjayev held a hearing on the lawsuit brought against journalist Faramaz Novruzoglu under Article 182 (extortion) and Article 182.2 (extortion repeatedly committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons using violence and causing damage to the victim).
Faramaz Novruzoglu (the accused), public prosecutor Asadulla Ramazanov and the defendant’s assigned counsel Sehran Akbarov attended the hearing.
In his speech Faramaz Novruzoglu did not plead guilty to the filed charges.
Later on the witness Khayal Asgarov, Sabuhi Abdullayev, Tahire Allahverdiyeva and Elchibey Faramazoglu were invited to the courtroom. Witness Asgarov said he does not know Novruzoglu, nor were they acquainted before. Abdullayev said he saw the defendant in the “Lider” internet café during five days, but had not known him before. Other witnesses, Tahire Allahverdiyeva and Elchibey Faramazoglu said the journalist’s computer taken for investigation was not returned after the investigation had been completed.
Judge Imran Burjayev announced that the proceeding will continue on July 18th 2:00pm.
Late on April 18th 2012 journalist Faramaz Novruzoglu was arrested by a special operation of the Investigation Department on Grave Crimes under the Prosecutor General’s Office. He is charged under Article 182 (extortion) and Article 182.2 (extortion repeatedly committed on preliminary arrangement by group of persons using violence and causing damage to the victim). If convicted, he may face an imprisonment for a term from 10 up to 15 years. Faramaz Novruzoglu worked for Khural newspaper for a long while. He is one of the founders of “24 hours” and “Nota bene” newspapers.
