GANIMAT ZAHID TRANSFERRED TO TREATMENT FACILITY

On 19 December, Azadlig Newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid was transferred to the Penitentiary Service’s Treatment Facility due to his health problems. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) was told this by Ganimat’s spouse Ayende Murseliyeva, who visited the journalist.

“Ganimat was transferred to the surgery department of the treatment facility,” said Murseliyeva. “We do not yet know how long he will stay there. He will be examined today, 21 December.”
A.Murseliyeva noted that G.Zahid siffers from chest pain and rheumatism. Therefore the editor-in-chief was examined by the Justice Ministry’s Chief Medical Office after several appeals were made to relevant organs. Then it was decided that Ganimat could not be treated in the prison.

Ganimat Zahid, who has been recognized as prisoner of conscience, was convicted under articles 127.2.3 (hooliganism with intentional infliction of minor bodily harm) and 221 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code and imprisoned for four years.
