Head of a regional NGO released

On September 26, Lenkoran Serious Crimes Court announced verdict on the case of Emil Mammadov, head of the NGO “Democracy Assistance” that is based in Salyan region.
The court passed a 2-year suspended sentence for Mammadov and the employee of his NGO, Tofig Gasimov. They were released from the courtroom.
The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS) was informed about it by lawyer Fariz Namazli.
Note that yesterday the public prosecutor requested a 2-year suspended sentence for both of them.
Note that Emil Mammadov wrote an appeal to the president asking attention to his case and noted his support for his policy.
Emil Mammadov was arrested on May 13 of this year and charged with extortion. Previously, the police had arrested Tofig Gasimov. The charge brought against them stipulated imprisonment for a period of 10 years.
