HEAD OF NATIONAL STATEHOOD PARTY SENTENCED TO ANOTHER MONTH OF PRE-TRIAL DETENTION

Today the Nasimi District Court held two separate hearings on the prosecutor’s appeal  to extend the  pre-trial detention of Nemat Penahli, the head of the National Statehood Party, and his friend Jeyhun Farzaliyev.  The hearings were chaired by judges Emin Mehdiyev and Etibar Humbatov.

The hearing was closed to the media.
The court first heard the case of Penahli’s friend Jeyhun Farzaliyev. After the closed hearing, Farzaliyev’s lawyer Elchin Aliyev told Objective TV that,  a decision had been made on the one-month extention of the investigation period, but that he was not allowed to give details.
Later on,  Nemat Penahli’s case was heard. Nemat Penahli filed a motion to change his lawyer. The motion was fulfiled.
Nemat Penahli’s brother Samad Panahov reported that Samir Isayev will now manage Penahli’s defence.  Panahli was  sentenced to another month of pre-trial detention .
Nemat Panahli and Farzaliyev were arrested on a charge brought by citizen Eldar Rzayev, for hooliganism committed with a weapon. If he is found guilty, Panahli could face 5 years in prison.

Panahli’s supporters claim that the real reason for his arrest is his journalistic activity. Prior to his arrest, he wrote a number of articles criticizing the government, published in various press outlets, including the Nota PS.
