HEARING REGARDING LAWSUIT ON OPENING NEW TV CHANNEL TO CONTINUE IN JUNE

Today, 20 May, in the Baku Economic Court #1, under the Chairmanship of Judge Museyib Bayramov, the preliminary hearing was held on the lawsuit of “Legal Education of Sumgayit Youth” (LESY) Public Union against Azerbaijan’s National TV and Radio Council (NTRC).

LESY wants the court to declare the NTRC’s refusal to grant a license to LESY to open a new TV regional channel in Sumgayit unfounded.
LESY President Elchin Mammad, LESY’s lawyer Assabeli Mustafayev, NTRC representative Togrul Mammadov and NTRC lawyer Nemet Javadov participated in the hearing.
NTRC representative Togrul Mammadov said the lawsuit was unfounded and stated that tenders are carried out by the NTRC to open local television channels in the regions.  “If such tender is conducted in Sumgayit in the future, these plaintiffs can also take part in the tender,” said Mamamdov. “We cannot grant anyone a license without a tender.”
Judge Bayramov scheduled the next hearing on this case for 16 June at 11:30 a.m.
In January 2009 LESY Public Union appealed to the NTRC to open a new TV channel in Sumgayit, but the appeal was rejected.
