Human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev’s health deteriorates in prison

Human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev is suffering health problems in jail, reported his lawyer Javad Javadov on his Facebook page. On May 15, Javadov had attempted to meet his client, who is being held in Baku Detention Center #1.

“On May 15, I went to Baku Detention Center to meet with Intigam Aliyev. But Mr. Aliyev did not come to the meeting and sent a message that he was unable to move due to acute pains in his back. This is very alarming news. I am currently preparing appeals to the Penitentiary Service and Baku Detention Center,” wrote Javadov.

Intigam Aliyev was arrested on 8 August 2014. On 22 April 2015, he was sentenced to 7.5 years in jail by Baku Grave Crimes Court. He stands convicted of tax evasion, illegal entrepreneurship, misappropriation, service forgery and abuse of official powers.

He rejects all charges, deeming them politically motivated.
