The arrests of youth activists Bakhtiyar Hajiyev and Jabbar Savalanli were discussed at a conference held by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights today.
Sweden's representative to the OSCE emphasized that Hajiyev and Savalanli were arrested for their activity on the social networks. Additionally, human rights defenders from Azerbaijan gave detailed information regarding both arrests. They also emphasized that it is necessary to release them and to raise this issue with the Azerbaijani authorities.
Moreover, human rights defenders touched upon the unsolved murder of late journalist Elmar Huseynov in 2005, psychological persecution of journalists, abducation and beating of Azadlig newspaper employees Seymur Haziyev and Ramin Deco. They also called for better regulation of the internet, and condemned hacking attacks against the websites of Azadlig and Yeni Musavat newspapers and Milaz.info website.
The conference will continue until 7th October. Human rights defenders from Azerbaijan will attend.
