JOURNALIST ASSAULTED DURING TAXI DRIVER PROTEST

Police used physical force to prevent Turan Information Agency employee Etimad Budagov from filming a large protest by Baku’s taxi drivers.

No other pressure was reported by other media representatives who reported from the protest.
The action was held in front of the Ministry of Transport and protested against what many taxi drivers consider unfair treatment by state authorities.
However, the police interference led to several arrests. Several protesters were also invited to the Ministry of Transport, where they were promised by the head of the PR Department, Namig Hasanov, that their questions will be answered in 2 days.
The protests come as a reaction to recent raids against drivers who operate without a driver’s license, or against those who use cars manufactured before 2006. These raids began on January 13th and are being conducted by the Ministries of Transportation and Internal Affairs.
