JOURNALISTS’ APPEAL NOT FULFILLED

Today (11 September) in the Yasamal District Court, under the Chairmanship of Judge Abid Abdinbayov, a hearing took place on the appeal of "Mukhalifat" Newspaper Department Editor Yashar Agazade and "Mukhalifat" Newspaper Editor-in-chief Rovshan Kabirli, regarding the abolishment of their prison sentence.

Rovshan Kabirli and Yashar Agazade participated in the hearing. They said that they were released through a presidential pardon decree and asked for annulment of their imprisonment. Judge Abdinbayov, after a short deliberation, did not fulfill the appeal.

On 11 July 2007, during a hearing held in the Yasamal District Court, under the chairmanship of Judge Malahat Abdulmanafova, Kabirli and Agazade were found guilty under article 147.2 (accusing in specially grave crime), and they were both sentenced to 2,5 year imprisonment. The journalists had been sued by Jalal Aliyev, president Ilham Aliyev’s uncle.

Both Kabirli and Agazade were freed through the presidential pardon decree on 28 December 2007. Despite this the court verdict on their imprisonment is not eliminated yet.
