Journalist’s appeal rejected again

On September 12, Baku Appeals Court under presiding judge Hilal Khalilov denied journalist Elmin Badalov’s appeal against the August 6 decision of the Baku Administrative-Economic Court #1, to deny his appeal for his reinstatement to the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, where he previously studied,  Badalov’s lawyer Fariz Namazli reported to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety on September 13.

The lawyer said they intend to file a cassation appeal against the decision.
Yeni Musavat newspaper correspondent Elmin Badalov was expelled from the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy on January 19, 2010. Badalov alleges that the teachers flunked him and he faced pressure for his article titled “Reportage from Azerbaijan State Oil Academy (ASOA)” on the pia.az website, where he described incidents of bribery and financial fraud in the ASOA. His lawsuit against ASOA and its rector Siyavush Garayev, demanding reinstatement to the academy, was denied by Nasimi District Court on April 5, 2010. On July 2, 2010 Baku Appeals Court upheld the original ruling. On November 23, 2010 the Supreme Court rejected his cassation appeal against this decision.
