The Assistance Fund for the Defense of Speech Freedom and Journalists’ Administrative Staff, which is financed by the Open Society Institute Assistance Fund, assisted journalists. According to information from the Fund, during the meeting held on 2 June, 6 appeals were considered and a decision was issued to allocate 2500 AZN in total.
According to the item “assistance for the defense of journalists who are involved in court” 300 AZN was allocated to Olke newspaper’s editorial office. According to the item “assistance to the family and official representative of imprisoned journalist;” blogger Emin Abdullayev`s family received 400 AZN, and Gundelik Azerbaijan and Realniy Azerbaijan Newspapers’ Editor-in-chief Eynulla Fatullayev`s family (according to Emin Fatullayev`s appeal) received 400 AZN.
For the line item “assistance for the treatment of journalist injured while doing his/her professional work” Azadlig Newspaper Editor-in-chief Ganimat Zahid received 800 AZN to continue his medical treatment in a foreign country, Institute for Reporters` Freedom and Safety’s Regional Correspondent Hekimeldostu Mehdiyev received 300 AZN, and Independent journalist Mahal Ismayiloglu received 300 AZN.
The Yeni Nesil Journalist Union, the Azerbaijani Journalist Union, the Najaf Najafov Fund, and the Azerbaijan Democratic Journalists League are the founders of the foundation.
