On 14 October, Khural newspaper appealed to Narimanov District Court, requesting suspension of the enforcement of the June 18th ruling of the Baku Appeals Court, Khural newspaper editor-in-chief Avaz Zeynalli reported to IRFS today.
BACKGROUND
Vugar Safarli claimed that his honor and dignity were offended by the expression ‘press butcher’ which was used in the article 'Ilham Aliyev is not the president of Khural newspaper' published in Khural’s 25-31 July issue, and written by Avaz Zeynalli. Safarli filed a lawsuit demanding a refutation be published in the newspaper and 10,000 AZN in compensation.
On 12 October, 2010, Narimanov District Court partially fulfilled the lawsuit and issued a decision that Avaz Zeynalli should pay a 500 AZN fine. After complaints from both sides, the Baku Appeals court increased the 500 AZN fine to 5000 AZN and both the Baku Appeals Courth and the on February 7th, 2011, the Supreme Court, upheld the 2nd decision to fine Avaz Zeynalli 5000 AZN. Recently, the Narimanov District Executive Department notified the Khural newspaper editorial office that unless the court decision was executed in 10 days, a compulsory rule will be carried out. For this reason, Avaz Zeynalli appealed to court to stop enforcement of the ruling.
Khural newspaper was published weekly from October 2002 to September 2011 when the newspaper started publishing daily.
