KIEV HOSTS CONFERENCE ON FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND CENSORSHIP IN INTERNET

On 6 July, Media Rights Institute of the Ukraine held an international conference in Kiev on freedom of speech and censorship in internet. 

The speakers covered the situation of internet in Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Then discussions followed.
The civil society representatives of Ukraine spoke about the need to form a self-regulation mechanism in internet.
The representative of IRFS and Human Rights Club Rasul Jafarov attended the conference as well. He said in his report that prices of internet in Azerbaijan are higher; the access to dissident websites is blocked ‘when needed’. He also emphasized that the youth bloggers and the youth activists showing up on social networking sites face provocations and get into jail.
Jafarov also brought up the arrest of youth activists Jabbar Savalanli and Bakhtiyar Hajiyev in his speech.
Conference was supported by Internews and International Media Support.
