LIBEL CASE AGAINST EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT RETURNED TO COURT OF FIRST INSTANCE

Today, 24 December, the Baku Appeals Court heard the appeals hearing on the libel case brought by the Ministry of Education “Council for Textbook Evaluation” against educational consultant Alovsat Osmanli. 

Osmanli and his lawyer Elchi Sadigov, as well as the members of the Council for Textbook Evaluation that have signed the court appeal were in attendance.
Sadigov said that the signatures on the court appeal actually didn’t belong to the allged signers. He requested the Judge to ensure the attendance of all signers.
After deliberation, Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev decided to annul the decision of Yasamal District Court and return the case to the court of first instance.
Osmanli said that they would be appealing against the decision.
BACKGROUND
Osmanli is being sued for libel after his series of articles on the problems in the Azerbaijani education system for Azadliq newspaper accused the Council for Textbook Evaluation of neglecting its duties when selecting textbook sets for the school curriculum, assigning advanced books to intermediate classes. Yasamal District Court terminated the lawsuit on November 5th, 2010.
