Imprisoned editor-in-chief of Khural newspaper Avaz Zeynalli submitted an appeal against the January 23rd decision by Narimanov District Court based on the lawsuit brought against him by Baltika-Baku LLC director Adam Tlekhuray; the appeal was heard today in the Baku Appeals Court under judge Ilham Asadov.
Lawyer Elchin Sadigov filed a petition to the court to permit Zeynalli to be present at the hearing. The Judge stated that this petition will be considered in the next stage of proceedings. Sadigov also argued that because Narimanov District Court held the January hearing in the absence of the defendant, the decision was illegal. Arif Agayev, the legal representative of Tlekhuray, said that he disagreed with the appeal against the court of first instance.
The proceedings will continue on June 21st at 2:50pm.
On January of 2012, Narimanov District Court partially granted the lawsuit filed by Baltika-Baku LLC against Zeynalli, which demanded 150,000 AZN in compensation for libel. The newspaper was sentenced to a 50,000 AZN fine.
