Imprisoned “Bizim Yol” Newspaper reporter Mushfig Huseynov, who is being held in Prison #2, wants to refuse from medical treatment. The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by the journalist’s close relative Cavidan Huseynov, who visited Mushfig Huseynov in prison with the journalist’s father Tofig Huseynov yesterday, 14 June.
“Problems connected with Mushfig’s health persist,” said J. Huseynov. “He has strong pain in his back. Mushfig wants to refuse the treatment, since the treatments he has been receiving in the treatment facility of the prison have not been effective.”
On 11 June M. Huseynov was visited by OSCE and Council of Europe representatives and Azerbaijan Committee against Torture Chairman Elchin Behbudov, according to Javidan Huseynov.
Human Rights Defender, Azerbaijan Committee against Torture Chairman Elchin Behbudov told IRFS that the content of the meeting between M. Huseynov and OSCE and Council of Europe representatives is confidential. Therefore he cannot provide any information about what was said there.
Mushfig Huseynov was convicted under Article 311.1 (receiving of a bribe) of the Criminal Code and on 21 January 2008 was sentenced by Grave Crimes Court Judge Jamal Ramazanov to 6 years of imprisonment, followed by 2 year ban on his writing activity. However, this sentence was reduced to 5 years through a decision adopted by Appellate Court Judge Sahibkhan Mirzayev on 4 April 2008
