NEW PACE PRESIDENT REFUSES TO ANSWER QUESTION REGARDING POLITICAL PRISONERS AND IMPRISONED JOURNALISTS IN AZERBAIJAN

Yesterday, 25 January, during a press conference held in Strasburg, Council of Europe General Secretary Thorbjorn Jagland said that the release of political prisoners and youth bloggers in Azerbaijan is an important issue.

In response to a question from Turan information agency regarding important steps to be taken to solve the issue of imprisoned journalists and bloggers, Jagland stated that they have been continuously demanding Azerbaijan to work for the solution of this problem and have raised this issue before Azerbaijan’s leadership. Jagland expressed particular concern regarding imprisoned youth bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizade. He believes they were arrested for their “public activity.”
Turkish Parliamentarian Movlud Chavushoglu, who has been newly elected as the President of PACE, left the question from Turan information agency regarding the issue of imprisoned journalists and political prisoners unanswered.
Azerbaijan’s opposition forces and civil society representatives know Movlud Chavushoglu as a person loyal to Azerbaijan’s government.
