Reports are being circulated that yesterday evening the sale of newspapers by mobile newspaper salesmen was banned.
This morning Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety employees conducted monitoring to see if mobile newspaper salesmen were present. It was observed that not only were there no mobile newspaper salesmen, but newspaper stands have also been removed from the entrances and exits of metros and the streets in central Baku.
IRFS contacted “Gaya” Press Distribution Director Khanhuseyn Aliyev. He said, “There is no problem with the distribution of newspapers. Simply sales through stands on city streets and in the entrances and exits to metros have become restricted. This problem is being realized by police. While the president has given a decree to put an end to the sale of things from street stands, police are preventing the sale of newspapers.”
