POLICE USES PRESSURE AGAINST JOURNALIST WHEN DISPERSING ACTION HELD BY UFD

On 31 December 2008 “Olke” newspaper correspondent Zahid Nuraliyev faced pressure by Sabail District Police Department’s employees when police dispersed an action held by “Union for Democracy” in front of Iranian Embassy to Azerbaijan.

The Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety was told this by Z.Nuraliyev.
“Police first asked me not to take the action participants’ pictures,” said Nuraliyev. “I did not pay attention to this unfounded demand, and therefore they twisted my arms and sat me on a car. They took me far away from the area where the action took place and then set me free.” This incident coincided with holidays and therefore the journalist did not appeal to law enforcement organs, according to Nuraliyev.
“To tell the truth, I don’t intend to appeal; because pressure has always been used against the journalists, and all the appeals made to law enforcement organs in connection wit these did not have any results,” said Nuraliyev.
