SAKIT ZAHIDOV VISITED IN PRISON BY FAMILY

Today, 3 April, imprisoned “Azadlig” Newspaper journalist/satiric Sakit Zahidov was visited in Prison #10 by his wife Rena Zahidova and daughter Zulfiyya Zahidova. Rena Zahidova told this to the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety. According to Zahidova, S. Zahidov said that prison conditions are normal. During their meeting, S. Zahidov also said that although he is included in the amnesty act that was signed in honor of the Novruz holiday, he has refused this amnesty.

S. Zahidov presented a petition to the leadership of Prison #10, however they have not paid attention to this, said Zahidov. At the same time, Zahidov said “Prosecutor Eyyub Geyretov, who is investigating this matter, is intentionally impeding my release.”
R. Zahidova said that prisoners in Prison #10 have addressed an appeal to First Lady, parliamentarian Mehriban Aliyeva that emphasizes that the amnesty act is not being realized. M. Aliyeva was the deputy who proposed the amnesty act in parliament.
Sakit Zahidov was arrested on 23 June 2006 for possession of narcotics (this charge is widely understood to be spurious) and was sentenced to three years of imprisonment by the Grave Crimes Court. An amnesty act signed on 17 March 2009 should technically free his from serving the remainder of his prison sentence.
