Today, April 28th, the Nizami District Court of Ganja held a trial on the case of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, a youth activist charged with avoiding his mandatory army service, the activist’s attorney Elchin Namazov told Objective TV.
Hajiyev, his attorneys Alayif Hasanov, Elchin Namazov and public prosecutor Alexei Abbasov, as well as media representatives and a number of rights defenders were in attendance.
Namazov said that the trial kicked off with the motions filed by the defendant’s side. The attorneys filed motions to allow the activist to sit near his attorneys, to allow photo and video recording, to terminate the criminal case and release the youth activist on bail based on the written petitions submitted to the Judge by intellectuals – Intigam Aliyev, Jamil Hasanli, Eldar Namazov, Annagi Hajibayli and others.
Public prosecutor Alexei Abbasov requested the court to reject the motions deeming them as baseless.
Judge Emin Akhundov fulfilled two of the motions: one requesting to allow the activist to sit near the attorneys, and one requesting permission for photo and video recording.
Eldaniz Nagiyev, head of the military medical commission Eldaniz Nagiyev and military doctor Anar Isgandarov testified as witnesses.
The next hearing was postponed until 5 May, 2011.

BACKGROUND
A criminal case against Bakhtiyar Hajiyev opened at the end of January. At that time, he signed a commitment not to leave Ganja city. At the end of February his pre-trial detention was replaced with released under close police observation.
On March 4, Hajiyev was sentenced to one-month’s pre-trial detention. It is widely thought that Hajiyev was arrested for his activity on social networking sites and his support of the March 11 Great People’s Day campaign.
