Youth Activists Arrested

On October 11, religious activist Tabriz Guliyev was detained. According to Guliyev’s friends, he was convicted of resisting the police and was sentenced to 30-day imprisonment by Sabunchu District Court.

Also on October 11, member of Sumgait branch of the opposition party Azerbaijan Popular Front Party (APFP) Khatai Nabiyev was arrested and taken to Sumgait City Police Department. According to APFP Deputy Chairman Gozal Bayramli, the youth activist was charged with resisting the police and sentenced to administrative imprisonment for 30 days. Bayramli believes that the activist’s arrest is part of the ongoing crackdown on the participants of the National Council’s anti-referendum rallies of September 11 and September 17.

“The activists, who took part in the public rallies on September 11th and 17th, continue to be arrested. So far, more than two hundred activists have been interrogated by the local police. Many youth activists have been imprisoned for 1 to 30 days, fined or issued a warning,” the APFP representative said.
