The British Embassy in Azerbaijan has questioned the right to peaceful protest in Azerbaijan due to violence against peaceful protesters in Baku on 14 May and the pressure on journalists and social activists.
“The right to peaceful protest and independent media are pillars of the free society. The protection of these rights has been called into question by recent incidents such as the disruption of the May 14 peaceful protest and the violence against bloggers and journalists as Bahtyar Hajiyev and Aytan Mammadova. All allegations of violence must be thoroughly investigated,” reads a press release posted on the Embassy’s Facebook page.
