Conditions of Imposing Military Censorship on Media during Martial Law Specified in Azerbaijan

November 10th, 2016

Imposition of military censorship in Azerbaijan whenever required has been proposed in Milli Majlis (Parliament) and the definition of what constitutes military censorship has been given. The change has been included in Article 1.0.3 of the re-designed Law on Martial Law.

According to this Article, military censorship shall be applied whenever martial law is declared in the country. Military censorship includes prior coordination of the information and materials of the mass media with military authorities, state agencies and their officials, and surveillance of correspondences, television and radio broadcasting, telephone and radio communications to prevent the illegal distribution of the information constituting a state secret.

The draft law was recommended to the plenary session of Milli Majlis in the first reading.
