On January 7, a youth activist, a former “prisoner of conscience” Giyas Ibrahimov attempted self-immolation in front of the presidential administration.
Thus, he protested against the non-payment of compensation ordered by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
He doused himself with gasoline from a canister and held a lighter in his hand. However, the president’s security officers took the canister and lighter away from him, and detained him.
The journalists covering the action were pressured.
The Interior Ministry said that in connection with this issue, the official announcement will be later.
Giyas Ibrahimov was arrested in May 2016, when, together with another activist, the late Bayram Mammadov, he painted a monument to Heydar Aliyev with political slogans.
Both were sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of drug trafficking. Later, the ECHR declared their arrest illegal. Both activists were pardoned in March 2019.
