Kanal13 Baku Chief’s Pretrial Detention Extended

Nasimi District Court in Baku has extended the pretrial detention of Aziz Orujov, head of Baku bureau of Kanal13 internet television, until 17 December (for 3 months), lawyer Elchin Sadigov said.
The lawyer said he was going to appeal the decision.
“The investigative agency has not presented any evidence to the court in relation to the extension of pretrial detention,” the lawyer noted.
According to him, Aziz Orujov made a speech at the hearing, protested against the investigative agency and stressed that there was no ground at all to keep him in custody.
Aziz Orujov, head of Baku bureau of Kanal13 internet television, was sentenced to a 30-day administrative arrest by the decision of Nasimi District Court on 2 May. He was convicted under Article 535.1 (resisting police) of the Administrative Violations Code.
The day Orujov’s prison term was expiring, on 1 June, he was criminally prosecuted. The Serious Crimes Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office initiated a criminal case against him under Articles 192.2.2 (illegal business) and 308 (service forgery) of the Criminal Code.
The criminal case is related to Caucasus Media Research Public Union founded by him and Kanal13.
The journalist does not accept the charges.
