NIDA Activist’s Appeal Turned Down

On 27 January, Baku Court of Appeal rejected the appeal against Narimanov District Court’s decision of 16 January on NIDA Civic Movement activist Rahim Valiyev, lawyer Elchin Sadigov said.

According to the lawyer, the court did not discuss the issue of torture reports having been made to the prosecutor’s office on Valiyev’s subjection to torture, and left their petition unexamined.

Sadigov stressed that he would apply to the European Court of Human Rights regarding the violations against the activist.

Background: On 16 January 2017, Narimanov District Court of Baku sentenced Rahim Valiyev to 30-day administrative imprisonment under Article 535.1 (wilful disobedience to lawful requirements of the police) of the Administrative Offences Code.
NIDA Civic Movement believes that Rahim Valiyev was arrested for his critical Facebook posts.
